Accomplishments

The Red Wolf Coalition (RWC) is the only citizen support group advocating for the long-term survival of red wolves. The RWC’s major accomplishment has been to raise public awareness about the red wolf, a species that received relatively little attention and about which little was known. But now the red wolf has “gone national and international.” The RWC:

  • In 2007, co-sponsored a highly successful 5-day eco-trip to red wolf country.
  • Designed and launched a brand new website!
  • Sponsored the “Wolves and Wildlands in the 21st Century” exhibit at the Pocosin Lakes National Wildlife Refuge.
  • Facilitated the development of information kiosks that have allowed us to bring the story of red wolf restoration to visitors to the region.
  • Sought and received a donation for a merchandise trailer for use at howlings and other Red Wolf Coalition programs.
  • Expanded the organization’s affiliations with other major conservation organizations.
  • Took the lead in the acquiring the articles and providing the editing for the 2007 special red wolf issue of International Wolf magazine and updated that publication in 2009.
  • Assisted in the revision of the red wolf teachers’ curriculum (Far Traveler) that is used in public school classrooms and by home-school educators throughout North Carolina and elsewhere.
  • Conducted our signature howlings for thousands of participants.
  • Conducted red wolf programs for schools and other groups.
  • Received acclaim for the awarding of the 2009 “Who Speaks for Wolf” award to Executive Director Kim Wheeler. This annual award is given by the International Wolf Center to someone who has made significant contributions to wolf conservation and education.
  • Launched a $100,000 capital campaign for fencing materials to surround a natural habitat for captive red wolves at the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service Education and Veterinary Facility on the Pocosin Lakes National Wildlife Refuge near Columbia, North Carolina.
