NC Officials Demand Red Wolf Action

North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper, and Susi Hamilton, the state’s Secretary of Natural and Cultural Resources, have sent strong letters to the United States Fish and Wildlife Service demanding that the federal agency renew its long-stalled efforts to protect the wild red wolf population in North Carolina. Noting that “[t]he continued decline of this critically endangered species is unacceptable,” the state officials have requested that the USFWS return to its past red wolf program practices, including the introduction of breeding pairs, coyote sterilization, and the habitat utilization of the entire five-county recovery area.
